Glossary

Air conditioner is an appliance used to cool, humidify, dehumidify air. A refrigeration cycle does the cooling process. It provides comfort during hot and cold weather seasons.

ACCUMETER
The metering designed to feed the cooler with liquid refrigerant having greater cooling capability than gaseous refrigerant.

ACCURATOR
A device used to feed correct amount of liquid refrigerant into evaporator.

AIR-COOLED SYSTEM
An air conditioning system where refrigerant is Freon and condensing medium is air. The condenser is located outside and from the indoor unit the refrigerant lines are piped to it.

AUTO CHANGEOVER
This feature  provides automatic switching from primary air conditioning to a backup if the primary system fails.

BLOWER
Blower moves the air in a distribution system.

BTU
BTU is the acronym for British thermal unit.  It’s the standard measurement which describes the cooling capacity or heat being removed from air.

CAPACITY
This is the ability of a system to heat or cool a given amount of space. It is measured in BTU’s for heating and in tons for cooling.

CFM
Acronym for Cubic Feet per Minute and used to measure the rate of air flow in an air conditioning system.

CHILLER WATER SYSTEM
A system which has no refrigerant in the unit. Refrigerant is located remotely and contained in a chiller which cools the water and piped to the system to cool the space.

COMPRESSOR
Compressor moves the refrigerant from evaporator to outdoor condenser and back to evaporator. Hence it is called heart of the system since it circulates refrigerant.

CONDENSER
This transfers unwanted heat from refrigerant to a medium which absorbs them and transfers it to disposal point. Air-cooled condensers, evaporative condensers and water-cooled condensers are the 3 types of condensers used.

DAMPER
Dampers are used to control airflow. Also they are used effectively in zoning to modulate airflow to certain rooms.

DEFROST CYCLE
It is the process of disposing the frost during the heat season buildup from the outdoor coil.

DUCT
It is used for carrying on air to and from an air handling unit and are made of metals, fiberglass etc.

ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER
As name implies it is an electronic device which filters out large particles and contaminants in the indoor air. Then it electronically pulls out any magnetized tiny particles like viruses and bacteria, puffing them to a collector plate.

EMERGENCY HEAT
It refers to the back-up heat built into a heat pump system. Also knows as Supplemental or Auxiliary Heat

EVAPORATOR
This device draws heat from the surrounding air and moves it outside the refrigerated area these are commonly called as cooling coil, indoor coil, blower coil and chilling unit.

FILTER
Filter removes dust and other particles from air to reduce the load on the respiratory system and hence to protect the HVAC equipment.

FREE COOLING SYSTEM
It’s a water cooled system that has additional coil to provide chilled water cooling thereby reducing compressor operation.

HAIER
Haier’s air conditioners are well equipped with high performance tools ensuring a safety comfort zone. They keep the atmosphere clean and young.

HEAT PUMP
This air conditioner contains a valve which is used to alternate between cooling and heating.

HSPF
Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is abbreviated as HSPF. It’s the measurement of total heating output in BTU of a heat pump divided by the total electrical energy input in watt-hours

HUMIDISTAT
This regulates humidity input according to changes in the moisture content of the air.

INFILTRATION
This refers to air flow into a space usually through walls and leak..

INSULATION
Insulation slows down the transfer of heat.

ISOLATION VALVES
This is used for transfer and isolation of refrigerant charge in the cooler and stores refrigerant inside a chiller during servicing.

LG
They are renowned manufacturers of air conditioners having a brand quality. They are leading technology innovator which is easily revealed with their products.

LOAD CALCULATION

This calculation determines the heat gain and loss in a building to help proper installation of air conditioning and heating equipment may.

MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLS
This control system operates and monitors an air conditioning system with computer logic. Microprocessor controls are used to maintain accurate control of temperature and humidity.

NEMA
NEMA is the acronym for National Electrical Manufacturing Association.

OUTDOOR COIL
The part of central air conditioning system located outside the home. It is used as a heat transfer point.

PACKAGE SYSTEM
Here all components are located in one cabinet. They are installed either beside or on top of the home.

PREM-I-AIR
Prem-I-Air brand represents the quality and value of their products. They are environment safe, energy efficient and come at affordable prices.

PURGE DEVICE
This removes air and water vapor from refrigerant present inside a chiller. It is necessary in negative pressure designs.

RETURN AIR
It refers to the air that is drawn into a heating unit after circulated from the heater’s output supply to a room.

REVERSING VALUE
A device that reverses refrigerant flow when the system is switched from cooling to heating process.

SEER
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio denotes the air conditioning equipments efficiency. SEER  is the ratio of cooling delivered by a system to the dollar cost of the electricity that  runs the system. The unit will be more efficient if the rating is higher and lower the operating cost.

SETPOINT
It is the temperature of the desired comfort level. This is done using thermostat.

SPLIT SYSTEM
This denoted two major components. The system has compressor-containing unit and condenser outside the building and a non-compressor – containing air handling unit inside the building.

SUBCOOLING
Sub-cooling denotes a drop in temperature from a refrigerant liquid done by removing sensible heat.

THERMOSTAT
It monitors and controls the functions of a heating and cooling system and hence act as temperature control device. It contains sensors and relays.

TONNAGE
The measurement used to describe the cooling capacity of a system in air conditioning.

UPFLOW
This air conditioning system discharges air into the conditioned space through a top-mounted enclosure or overhead duct system.

VACUUM PUMP
Vacuum pump removes air and moisture from a refrigeration system which takes place at a pressure below atmospheric pressure.

WATT
Watt is a unit of power used to measure energy being produced or used. It is equal to one joule per second.

ZONING
This provides independent heating and/or cooling to different areas in a structure. Zoning use a, zoning dampers, bypass damper which regulates static pressure in the supply duct and system controller.
